I tend to think of social media as a bit like getting a paint set as a present. You have lots of tubes of colour, brushes, a mixing palette and a canvass.

When did that ever mean that you were going to be a Rembrandt or even that your masterpiece would generate anything in the way of cash?

The social media tools are nothing more than that, tools. It isn't knowing how these tools are supposed to be used that will make social media work for a company. It is the imagination and artistry that takes those tools with delicate hands and then conveys a vision on the canvass that is looked at, admired and ultimately paid for.

All too often we are holding up a paint-by-numbers set and kidding ourselves that the Royal Academy is only a step away.

It is only when you start to look at social media as part of an overall digital marketing strategy with clear business goals that you will ever unlock the potential that social media specifically and digital media in general can provide.
.-= Aaron Savage´s last blog ..Is display advertising segmented by geography a waste of time? =-.

Awesome post, and you're so right. I'm so tired of the pundits going on an on about how 'free' social media is, as if time has no value.
